Council moving on BrimbankCAN proposal

21 04 2009

If you’ve been following local media reports from last week, the Brimbank City Council has conceded to a buy-up scheme for residents.  There was of course a great deal of lobbying from the current sitting Green Councillor, Geraldine Brooks; building on the work started by former Greens Councillor, Miles Dymott.

The current scheme being pursued by the Council is very commendable and a major step in the right direction.  However, while this is positive, the Council’s own emissions remain unaccounted or off-set.  There is still no single recycling policy instituted across the Council’s business units.  The discrepancies of just this one policy area makes such schemes seem somewhat meaningless. (Why would people do use it if the Council doesn’t) In addition the Council is yet to consider other policy areas like using the empty space on buildings for solar energy panels; along with incorporating energy efficiencies into building maintenance.

BrimbankCAN will continue to lobby the Council to do more to reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions, and support residents, ratepayers and businesses to reduce energy consumption.

EarthHour: Is it relevant?

13 04 2009

There was a lot of criticism surrounding the relevancy of EarthHour and it’s impact as a grassroots campaign.  In addition, BrimbankCAN received several queries about why we hadn’t advertised EarthHour through out blog.  So to deliver an answer to the queries and to respond to general criticism of EarthHour we present the following:

  • EarthHour was very well promoted and did not require additional space to advertise something already well promoted.
  • EarthHour represents an on-going educational and awareness campaign.  It has never been promoted as delivering a grassroots solution to climate change by encouraging people to turn off their lights for an hour.
  • BrimbankCAN believes EarthHour is relevant to raising awareness about reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the simple ways we can do so around the household; like turning off the lights in rooms not being used.

The Comedy of Climate Change

ROD QUANTOCK EATS HIMSELF

Can you shoot a gun? Do you own a tank? What about a black belt? Have you tasted human flesh? If you answered ‘no’ then you won’t survive climate change.

“In a future of fires, floods and famines people will be divided into two groups,” Rod said, “the eaters and the eatees.” Ever the rebel, Rod is a self-eater, and every night, bit-by-bit he
will literally eat himself before someone else does.
